O, is a pure
substance, a compound made of hydrogen and oxygen. Although water
is the most abundant substance on earth, it is rarely found naturally in its pure
form. Most of the time, pure water
has to be created. Years ago, high purity water was used only in limited applications. Today, deionized (or “DI”) high purity water has become an essential ingredient in hundreds of applications. Just a few include the following:
DI or deionized water is simply water that has had most of the mineral content and dissolved ion content removed.
- Medical offices
- Pharmaceutical companies
- Cosmetics companies
- Large aquariums, fish tanks, and reef-keeping facilities
- Electronics manufacturing plants
- Food processing plants
- Plating and anodizing
- And even the final rinse at the local car wash!
It is just pure water. The cleanliness of the water is rated as its resistance value. It should be noted that pure water will not conduct electricity. It’s the ions in the water that conduct the electricity. Deionization is simply an ion-exchange process in which water flows through resin beds or resin beads. Cation resin exchanges hydrogen ions (H ) for positive ions, and anion resin exchanges hydroxide ions (OH-) for negative ions. Sometimes there are two columns of Deionization – one for the Anions and one for the Cations, but the highest quality water is produced by what is called mixed-bed DI or “MBDI” whereby the Cation exchange and Anion exchange resins are mixed together.
