First Line of Defense - Sediment Filters

SpectraPure’s water purification systems feature sediment, carbon, and thin-film composite membranes (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO). For our Coffee Lovers System, we add a remineralization stage. For our aquarium systems, we add our proprietary deionization (DI) filters, which further polish the water coming from the RO membrane. In this blog, we cover your first line of defense — the sediment filter! Municipal water treatment secures the potable safety of city water, however, the systems of water distribution can unintentionally add rust and other partially dissolved or suspended forms of sediment. Wikipedia defines sediment as a naturally occurring material that is broken down by the processes of weathering and erosion. For our purposes, incoming sediment is considered to be anything larger than one millimeter in diameter. To put that into some perspective, a one-carat diamond is approximately seven millimeters in diameter. Crazy to think of drinking a particle one-seventh the size of a diamond ring, right? Can you imagine the potential damage that unfiltered sediment could cause to the other stages of your filtration system, especially the delicate RO membranes? This is why removing sediment and having a proper maintenance schedule in place is extremely vital not only for the integrity of your sediment filters but the lifespan of your entire filtration investment! At SpectraPure, we recommend changing out your sediment and carbon filters every six months. You should also change the elements for your RO, DI, and re-mineralization stages at least once a year.
