Pre-Filtration for Pumped Reverse Osmosis PSP Systems

Notes on Pre-Filtration Reverse Osmosis Pre-Filtration should be a combination of sediment and carbon filtration. The Sediment Filters bring the feed water NTU value to < 1. The Carbon Filters further reduce the sediment & turbidity levels in your filters. They bring chlorine, chloramines and VOC (volatile organic chemicals) levels in the water down to acceptable levels. Because of the high recovery of the pumped RO systems we highly recommend the use of a Water Softener ahead of the Reverse Osmosis system. This will greatly increase membrane life and reduce maintenance costs of the RO system. Choose a GAC Filter and a Sediment Pre-filtration Assembly, OR Choose an Integrated Pre-filtration Assembly. Calcium, Magnesium, Iron and Manganese salts present in water supplies foul the membranes and reduce their productivity. Water softeners exchange hardness (Calcium, Magnesium, Iron and Manganese) for Sodium. Sodium Salts are highly soluble and do not foul the membranes readily. If you have any hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in your water supply, you need a Catalytic Carbon filtration assembly. Carbon filter tanks contain Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) and are used for high volume removal of chlorine, chloramines, organic compounds, pesticides and other chemical contaminants found in many water supplies today. They protect the membrane from deterioration and fouling. They can be used on large systems to pre-filter water prior to introduction into RO membranes. The GAC can be regenerated (back washed) and all systems come with Fleck® control valves accomplishing regeneration automatically. Note: GAC filters, when used to supply water to an RO system, must be purchased with the Micro-Switch Option that turns the power off to the RO system when the filter is back washing.
